Guns in Church?

Last week a bill was passed to allow concealed carry in churches.

From the AP:
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Some pastors are concerned about a bill in the Arkansas Senate that would allow concealed weapons in churches.

“I believe it would disturb the sanctity and tranquillity of church,” said Pastor John Phillips, a shooting victim who opposes the measure.

Churches would be allowed to bar guns, but, Mr. Phillips said, “Do you want ushers to stop you at the door and frisk you?”

The bill’s supporters say the issue is not about gun rights but a constitutionally protected right for churches to set their own rules.

Grant Exton, the executive director of the Arkansas Concealed Carry Association, said that allowing concealed weapons would not make churches more likely to have volatile situations, but that that was not the point.

It is a problem of the government “telling churches what to do in an area of moral issue, where that should be none of their business,” Mr. Exton said.

Of 48 states that allow concealed carry, 42 let churches make the decision, he said.
